History of West Metro Soccer Club.......
The Club was founded in 1978 as The Pineview Pinegrove Soccer Club. Its purpose was to provide a quality soccer experience to the children of Cayce, West Columbia, Springdale, Three Fountains and eastern Lexington County. Our fields are provided to us by the Lexington County Recreation and Aging Commission. In 2010, the Club changed its name to the West Metro Soccer Club to provide the community with a clearer understanding of our service area. We are located at the West Columbia Soccer Complex on Old Barnwell Rd. between Sausage Lane and Emmanuel Church Rd. near Three Fountains.
Over the years, soccer has grown considerably in the Midlands. In Lexington County there are currently five distinct soccer clubs. The largest is the Lexington County Soccer Club located at the Gibson Rd. Soccer complex in downtown Lexington. There is also an all girl league called the Lexington County Girls Soccer Club which uses complexes across the county. In the Swansea/Gaston area is the newly formed Sandhills United Soccer Club. The Congaree Rapids Soccer Association has an academy and classic program in West Columbia/Cayce. The West Metro Soccer Club is a co-ed recreational soccer club which services players from all parts of eastern Lexington County.
For over 27 years, WMSC formerly PineviewPinegrove Soccer Club was administered chiefly by Gary Taylor. Mr. Taylor spent a tremendous amount of volunteer time making sure the children of our area had a positive soccer experience. When Gary Taylor stepped down as President, he asked Laura Stevens to take over. Laura Stevens saw the club through many changes in its operating procedures. The Club is served by a Board of Directors which has between nine and seventeen members along with five officers. Each member family has one vote during board meetings which are held quarterly.
Ralph Estep followed next and had been a board member for several years prior to taking on the responsibilities of President. Ralph also advanced the Club in requiring certifications for all coaches and participating in community events. WMSC has participated in the Cayce/WCola Christmas Parade for the last three years. In 2010, WMSC placed in the top ten for float designs.
There are several member families that have devoted a great deal of volunteer time to the Club. Members donate their professional expertise in web design, photography, landscaping, and business connections.
WMSC is always on the lookout for coaches, team parents and general volunteers. The Club has made it a priority to keep soccer affordable for all children. We accept donations of both time and money. We are proud to say that we are probably the cheapest game in town!!!
